Position Description:
The Idylwylde Golf and Country Club is seeking a Head Ice Technician for the 2026–2027 curling season. Our club operates a five-sheet curling facility in Sudbury, Ontario, hosting multiple weekly leagues, regional bonspiels, youth programs, rentals, and community events throughout the season.
Reporting to the Winter Operations Manager the Head Ice Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining and removing the ice. They will be responsible for maintaining and operate all ice-making equipment safely and effectively for the entire curling season. The successful candidate will work with a team of part time ice staff to provide high quality playing conditions and must be able to provide and schedule effective ice maintenance to meet the demands of busy daytime, evening and weekend curling activities.
This position offers seasonal employment (September to April) and is renewable annually. The position will begin with ice installation in September 2026, with the season running through April 2027. Will be expected to work some evenings and weekends.
Key Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Day-to-day ice operations ensuring high quality and safe playing conditions as well as establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with the Winter Operations Manager, General Manager, Ice staff and members.
- Adhering to all policies and procedures as well as any federal, provincial and municipal legislation and TSSA regulations relating to the safe operation of the ice plant and shed.
- Lead and schedule the ice plant start up and shutdown, schedule ice surface painting, install ring and line logos, strings and removable hack installations.
- Schedule and implement weekly ice maintenance including daily scraping, pebbling and nipping before regular league play and as required for bonspiels and other events, regular levelling floods/controlled melts as required (minimum twice a season).
- Willingness to schedule practice times and accommodate draw changes as required.
- Cleaning and vacuuming the areas surrounding the ice surface.
- Daily equipment maintenance and record keeping including ice plant operating conditions recruiting, training and scheduling of assistant ice staff.
- Regularly maintain and repair ice making equipment and tools.
- Report bi-monthly to the Winter Operations Manager on the condition of the ice shed, ice plant and ice maintenance equipment.
- Perform mid-season major ice maintenance during Christmas holiday break.
- Minor facilities maintenance and repair as needed both on and off the ice.
- Removal of ice, proper storage of rocks, rings, logos and equipment, facility clean up at the end of the season.
Qualifications
- Reliable, detail-oriented & comfortable with a seasonal schedule.
- Physical ability and experience to perform ice making and maintenance activities.
- Able to work independently & perform physical tasks.
- Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot ice and ice making equipment.
- Experience installing ice on a cement floor.
- Working knowledge of ice plant control systems.
- Willingness to attend ice technician courses – funded by the Club.
- Interest or participation in curling is a strong asset.
- Be able to provide a Clean Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
Compensation:
$40,000 – $45,000 depending on experience
Approximately 1,400 hours per season
